Re: [RC] Putrid pus from left nostril - Don Huston

Hi Dyane,
I'm not a vet, my horses have all had at one time or another some kind of flu with their nose dripping terrible yellow nasty pus and I would suspect that your horse will have pus on both sides real soon. I'd give 20cc PennG twice a day for 6 days. Use warm Penn, rotate around the horse, neck and butt, left and right, rub injection site firmly and hand walk for a bit. All got well and no other problems. If it takes 2 weeks until the horse seems fine then I wait 2 more weeks before any real work. I did ride them after 6 days but only at the walk for an hour or so to keep everything moving along.

Has anyone had experience with this?

This morning, when my vet was here to give vaccinations, we found that my 15 year old gelding (endurance horse hopeful) had pus coming out of his left nostril. His temperature is normal. The vet couldn't find hear any problems in his sinuses (he tapped on them the way you would to see if a melon is ripe). His lungs sound okay. He's eating and pooping. He's a little bit subdued, but still plays some. But the smell is awful!

For the moment, we are stumped. Has anyone else had this problem? What is it? What did you do?

Dyane
