RE: [RC] [RC] carbon monoxide or lack of oxygen? - Mike Lewis

The Mr. Heater has a low-oxygen shutoff feature, too, but I'm thinking
that it won't turn the heater off till WAY after the ballgame has ended
for the folks in the bed section if the heater is placed down on the
floor.

There may be plenty of Oxygen down low (where there are more air leaks, at
least in my trailer) than in the section above the gooseneck hitch...
something for folks to think about...

Another thing to think about---if you are using a catalytic heater, or
just
like to sleep with a window or vent open. Under the right wind/air
convection conditions the CO from your neighbors generator or idling
truck
can enter your living quarters. We've had it happen and set off our
detector. Over time a Catalyic pad can become damaged and malfunction,
emiting CO. Battery operated CO's are CHEAP, about $30. You should also

have one in your home if you have a gas furnace or hot water heater.
The newer Olympia catalytic RV heaters have a low oxygen sensor which
will
shut them off when oxygen gets down to a certain level. Can't use them
above a certain elevation though.

Open flame heaters (like my Zodi tent heater) = emit carbon monoxide
Catalytic heaters (like the Mr. Heater and Black Cat tent heater) =
consume
oxygen
Therefore a detector isn't going to help you with a catalytic heater,
right? Just be sure to vent a window.
If your heater has a *flame*, then it should not be in the area where
you
are unless properly designed with a sealed vented box (like an LQ/RV).
