[RC] Legs forward - Jay Randle

Hi All

From my experience seeing Arab riders ride here in Australia, in general
these riders really don't have a clue about finesse on a horse. I can't say that they aren't good horsemen/women, however most of them (not all) haven't had the opportunity of taking riding lessons.

Mind you, the old Australian stockman/drover/ringer also did not tend to have a very good seat on a horse (in general), although they too were excellent horsemen.

And I have witnessed Australian endurance riders (some of them quite successful) who don't have a good seat or hands and yet they complete rides!

The 'legs forward' seat seems to be an aberration that occurs with anyone either just learning to ride, or who has been riding for a while with no lessons or input from anyone else. I also see this seat when teaching people to ride here. Of course, my students learn quick smart that they better sit up and listen when I tell them!!! :-)

Mind you, with the variety of styles of riding all over the world, who are we to say that 'our' style is any better? I was raised in a distinctly 'english' style of riding, believing that the 'western' style was lazy and sloppy. It was only when I worked for a couple of cutting trainers in the US that I learned really quickly that the 'western' style had a purpose, and certainly was not easy nor sloppy! In fact, I have often given thanks to those trainers who showed me that there really are "different courses for different horses".

So, although the 'legs forward' seat looks bad to us, and although it goes against everything that we've been taught, maybe it serves a purpose in the type of riding that they do over there? Although I must say that all my riders are taught to get off the horses' back, and if I saw my riders riding like that I would be mortified!

Best regards

Jay Randle
