[RC] Comfort Issues on Long Rides - Skyla Stewart

Mike,

I'll start with the calf and stirrup strap, do NOT "put up with it", I got a huge bloodclot from doing just that! If the only relief you need would be helped by half chaps or boots then you need to do that, maybe a long sock with an inner support piece? If you liked the half chaps, here are a couple things to try, have them made a tad shorter or longer, if you want longer-one thing I did was had a saddler sew a stiff upper cuff on the inside of the leg and it worked GRAND and was a cheap fix about $3! Now I buy the zipper kind since for 'me" the velcro ones would sag down and constantly catch the flaps, drive a person nuts. What ever you do, don't go on with concentrated pressure, fix it now.

Yup, shorter hair on the legs could help. There are plenty of slick-em-up products out there to try too such as Body Glide, many, many products to help out. Sometimes heat build up from friction will cause significant problems, you can carry some stuff with you on the ride such as Bag Balm, Body Glide or whatever works.

Maybe the material you have in your tights is a potential problem too, some have more friction and or heat build up. Sometimes the padding is worse then nothing, there are alot of tights to choose from with alot of options.

Do you move alot when traveling down the trail, maybe that is an area you could look into?

As odd as this could sound, as for the ankles make sure your shoes/boots have proper orthothics (sp?) that help support your foot. I found that my best hiking boots, which aligned my legs decent also gave me better support in riding including my knees, so you never know.

You are so NOT alone with your problems! The only problem you will have now is figuring out which "idea" to start with first, as you will get LOTS of them. :o)
