now a question for the steward: is it ok for the RM to be an entrant  
as well? i.e. Can I ride??

The official reply from the Ride Steward is as follows:

The Ride Manager may ride his own ride if a suitable "day Manager" is
appointed to handle any problems that may arise during the time the Ride
Manager is on the trail. 

This applies to the time the Ride Manager is actually out on a horse on a
trail and, alternately, when the Ride Manager is plotting a virtual trail on
Google Maps or the like. 

The nomination of a "Day Manage" will be approved by the Ride Steward.
