RE: [RC] The last Olympics - Susan

That’s it! I looked it up and it’s now called the Modern Pentathlon…here is the info from the website. I didn’t see anything about the next Olympics but they did ride horses in 2004.

Shooting comes first. The pentathletes have 40 seconds to fire 20 shots from an air pistol at a 17cm-square target from 10 metres. Fencing follows, with a round-robin competition between each participant. Swimming is third, a freestyle race over 200 metres, with athletes seeded in heats according to their personal best times. Once they have dried off, the pentathletes head to the show jumping ring, where they have 20 minutes to get to know the horse before riding. The final event is the 3000m run, with the pentathletes set off at intervals corresponding to their points so the first person across the line wins the gold medal.

Was this maybe part of the Pentathlon?   Supposed to demonstrate a military scout's ability to get a message back to the generals ?

Soldier had to do fencing, pistol shooting, swimming running and riding, what ever it took to get through.  Riding to be on whatever horse they could find on the way.

Truly in the spirit of the first Olympics?

I think I read they were removing the equestrian part of this event??

There was a competition where the riders had to pull which horse they were going to ride out of a hat. They then had to compete in 3 or 4 events, cross-country and jumping were the two I saw and it was interesting. I wish I hadn’t taped over the events because there was this young woman from China who had a very large uncontrollable horse (to her). She fell off once got back on and kept on going. It was like the keystone cops but that girl had grit!
