Re: [RC] Paintballing dogs - jamie ward

I think it depends on the horse and it's temperament, We had an older horse that loved nothing better the to turn around and chase the  offending dog. And a pony  right now that is fine with dog's..... unless they act threatening towered him then he will give um a double barrel kick (not when your riding him then it's just a kick) another one will give an annoyed half hearted kick the others  do nothing. On the paint balling thing....some of The cheaper paintball gun's do not have as much of a punch as others (my brother's are avid paintballer's and i got that from them) I have used one on a neighbors 2 dog's, Where we used to live the dog's would bite at our goat's drawing blood and chase/nip our horses and  spread our trash everywhere, Even though we had a fenced yard they found ways in. I told the neighbor, She said They wouldn't harm anything and it must of been my dog's doing it her dog's stayed home. so... I borrowed a paintball gun and used a different color each night.. It got the point across that they were indeed going somewhere. and she put up a kennel for at night and when she was not home. It took care of the problem without her having to put the dog's down she was an older lady and they were her "babies" so I really didn't want it to come to that. Jamie

Really good point, Karen.  I remember a many years ago, when I was playing guide for a rental stable, we had a problem with one homeowner whose dog would come out and harass the horses at that point in the trail.  The stable owners daughter took out one of the horses that we knew hated dogs.  The dog attacked - the horse kicked the dog back through the fence - end of problem.  I don't think the dog was hurt, but he sure didn't attack any more horses !

The trick is to get a horse that will do that.  I wouldn't have a clue as to how to train one to do that.

With all this talk about paintballing dogs and other interventions, I have not seen a recent discussion about teaching your horse to charge or attack the dog.
