[RC] Loungeing a horse - Sheila_Larsen

Loungeing has bad reputation because people use it incorrectly. It is a
training tool, not just letting your horse bomb around at the end of a
line. It can help a horse learn balance, rythm, coordination, and verbal
cues. With that said, to do it well takes time and practice, to do it well
is like any other skill. Side reins should be used, and the circles should
be large, particularly in the beginning. As the horse gets better at it,
one can spiral them in and then out. I wouldn't lunge for more than 20
minutes, if you do longer make sure that you give them breaks, but 20
minutes is plenty and only a few times a week. Good footing helps. They
can learn to go over caveletti and as someone else pointed out jumping
(without side reins) is fun for them. If you are concerned about circles,
try long lining them (more exercise for you).
