Re: [RC] [RC] Rescue update RIP Ginger - Karen Sullivan

Wow Jamie,
This sure hit home.....Years ago, I had a  horse go down in my trailer, right as i pulled into my driveway; the whole scenario, labored breathing...we tried to get her up on her feet to no avail; she died in front of me...horrible thing, so I surely can relate.  My vet said later he guessed it was heart attack or stroke......I upset beyond words...my husband helped by saying, sort of , that this comes with the territory, of buying unknown horses, transporting them, heck, riding and owning...you just never  know; be involved with horses long enough, there will be heartache, but there will also be moments of bliss....bless your heart for trying to help this horse....

We took Ginger(she's the 25+) and Gambler to the vet today,We wanted checkups on them and their opinion on what to do with Ginger They could get them in sooner if we trailered in,  since Ginger did fine on the ride to the barn a few weeks ago we figured she would do fine on the much shorter ride to the vet since she had much more energy now. We didn't feel anything more then normal on the way over and we drove slowly however while Adam went to check in I was to unload. I found Ginger on the ground most her body was under the divider and she was almost under gambler I quickly untied her she laid her head down and her breathing was labored. By this time the vet and his assistant were at the trailer. Their was no way to get Gambler out with out him stepping on her,and she would not be getting up, We don't know if she had a stroke, however that seams likely. She started thrashing with her leg's to get up (Vet was going to put her down at this point anyways ) so The vet and his assistant quickly euthanized her We were afraid her thrashing would break Gambler's leg's. It was sad to see she has showen so much will to live even with ! The vet said at least her last few week's she knew a warm stall and a full belly, The only bright part of the day is Gambler is fine and the vet didn't see any need to run blood since he has been gaining so well.

When I can't ride any more, I shall still keep horses as long as I can hobble about with a bucket and wheelbarrow. When I can't hobble, I shall roll my wheelchair out to the fence of the field where my horse's graze, and watch them. - Monica Dickens
