Re: [RC] [RC] Is Beet Pulp Toxic To Horses? The Real Story - desertrydr1

I am not sure this was the study originally sited, as this one doesn't seem to me to address specifically the issue of beet pulp effects on mineralization in young horses.  I thought I remembered a study that specifically spoke to that.  I guess the bottom line for me is that I would find another source of added calories for young horses until I thoroughly understand the issues.

My babies, now 19 months and just over 2 yrs, got pretty much nothing but pasture and a bit of Equine JR (on the advice of my vet).  I was feeding Purina "Born to Win" but my vet thought it was too rich in protein, and only a vitamin/mineral supplement.  Sometimes reading the tag without an expert's opinion leads to faulty conclusions.  My 19 month old colt (gelded at 12 months) is now over 15H and grew like crazy this summer.  It seems like every time I measured him (every worming) he had grown an inch!  The 2 yr old also grew, but not as fast or as much, since her rate of growth has slowed in her 2nd year.  jeri

Sorry, I want to make sure I'm understanding this correctly. Based on Dr.
Lawrence's study, are you thinking that beet pulp can contribute to mineral
deficiencies, and therefore needs to be minimized or deleted from young
horse's diets?

This is worth talking about, but I'm not sure you're reaching the same
conclusions that Dr. Lawrence does.

Jeri,

Yep, you are correct. Thanks. I found an article on
the following link:

http://jas.fass.org/cgi/reprint/77/12/3330.pdf

I think I'll cut down my colt's beet pulp daily ration
to a cup of soaked...just enough to give him his
vitamins! But both my older horses get the same
amount though.
