Right on, Kat.  And the proof of your statement will be when the actual 2008 championship is held and the completion rate is the usual dismal percentage.  Same course, once again elite riders, but the behavior rewarded will be different winning versus comleting.  Anyone want to predict the completion rate?

Coupled with the fact that the purpose of the event was to prove that a
good completion rate could be achieved, and obviously (since it wasn't
even reported in Steph's post about the success of the ride), who
crossed the finish line first is totally irrelevant.

This goes a long way towards proving the rather obvious statement that
"you get the behaviour your reward" even at endurance rides.
