Re: [RC] [RC] I Got Mine! - Dawn Carrie

Dana,
Thanks for your really neat post.  As you point out, there are a lot of ways to "participate" in AERC.  And who knows how many other people have gone on to greater things after completing an LD or two...and those "greater things" don't necessarily have to be 50s or 100s!

My then 9yo son.  He did one LD that year, 25 miles, a mere training ride for most of you.  But for him it was a Major Life Event, largely due to the efforts of Ruth Waltenspiel, Maryben Stover, and Dr. Jamie Kerr.  From that day forward he proudly proclaimed that he was an "endurance rider" (he still has his "To Finish Is To Win" flashlight ;-p)  For various reasons he hasn't entered a ride since...

And then 5 months ago the kid who'd never played football decided to go out for the freshman team because, in his mind, anyone who can ride 25 miles can do pretty much anything.  And he became their starting right tackle.  And last night they won their league championship.  And now the kid who's never wrestled is going out for wrestling.

Helped in large part because of one LD ride.

He's been an AERC member for 5 years now.  And he's volunteered at rides for 5 years.  And crewed.  LDers do more than just "pad" ride finances.  :-)

Just another facet of the LD "debate" (?tempest in a teapot? ;-p).
