Re: [RC] [RC] Bodyclip or not? - Kathy Mayeda

I do an shabby job of a modified trace clip on Beau,my grey, every winter becasue he's terribly fuzzy. Just along the lower neck and the "drip line" and leave the girth area and belly unclipped. It really helps and I glad I did it before we rode Mission Peak this last weekend.

My mare, on the other hand, is not quite as fuzzy so I don't bother. They are both unblanketed pasture horses. Drako I don't bother clipping because this metroxexual horse does not like to get sweaty at all anyway.

I've been amused at my new boarding barn about people showing off there pretty full body winter clips for their blanketed, coddled horses. I mis good old Lightfoot Stables.

Jennifer,

I personally am not a fan of body clipping. I know a lot of folks do it, and feel it is necessary. Of course, if my fuzzy N.CA horses were to travel to, say Malaysia..I might have to think about it.

One thing I did last February when I went down to the Eastern Mojave ride was to get out the shedding block and strip all the hair out that would come for the last two weeks before I went..But that likely won't help you this time of year.

If you do clip, a trace clip is better as your horse is likely not used to being "naked" under his saddle..!

Hi all,

For any of you in the warmer, more humid states, I am doing my first ride in FL next weekend....just a 27 mile CTR. It has been suggested to me that I bodyclip Shahtahr.

I am new to FL and these warm winters, and am completely unfamiliar with bodyclipping. I have never bodyclipped in my life. My neighbor has offered to do it for me.

But before I go ahead with it, I wanted to know if is it really necessary to bodyclip when competing during the winter in FL? Shahtahr is not super fuzzy, but definitely is not as sleek as he is in the summer months. My neighbor told me that the only time she ran into trouble at a CTR was on ride in January and it was the only time she had decided not to bodyclip. Her gelding ended up with the thumps, and the ride vet told her that bodyclipping might have prevented it.

If I do decide to bodyclip, what are the general rules of thumb on when to blanket? Last night we got down to the mid 50's.... (warm to some of you, I know!) but is that too cold to leave a bodyclipped horse loose in his pasture overnight? Will I be committed to blanketing and/or stalling every night if it is just slightly cool and he's clipped?

I could do a trace clip I guess, but they're so funny-looking.... :)

I'm totally lost on this subject. I come from CA and our ride season (NATRC) ended in November and started back up in April, so bodyclipping was never an issue.

Help..?

Thanks,
Jennifer
