I don't think we assume most LD riders are racing.  There is just a tiny minority, just as there is a tiny minority of 50 milers who race imprudently.  LD simply offers the best venue for racing, because the unwary think it's not too far to race a horse the whole way.

So,,, don't assume that most LD riders are racing, and as has been pointed out, abuse can certainly happen on a 50 as easily as on a 25.
