Re: [RC] Cloning of PIERAZ, Valerie Kanavy's endurance horse - Linda Marins

I guess there are some things people are excited about with all of this but as for me, I just can't help it - messing with mother Nature in such a way.....just gives me the heebie jeebies. From a purely pragmatic standpoint, with so many factors at play in creating a top competitor, I don't really see the value related to cost and risk in breeding such an animal...
I understand your sense of trepidation.  I feel it too.  On
the other hand, as someone interested in Morgans who
have a narrow genetic pool to begin with, and which is
now getting narrower and narrower due to fad breeding,
I think it would be a good idea to "bank" the genetic
material of a lot of great Morgan lines now, while we
still have them.  By 2100, we're going to need them.
I'd have banked my old gelding, and would bank my
great old mare (a blue hen Morgan mare line that's
been actively, consciously bred--as broodmares--for
over well over 100 years), if there was any reliable,
affordable technology known to preserve a viable,
complete sample.  (Does formaldehyde destroy DNA?)
