Re: [RC] energized horses/making them that way and then toning it down! - Kathy Mayeda

I could ride my endurance horse in literally anything, except during an endurance ride. He's pretty tractable during conditioning rides, even with several other fast horses. But he does get racebrain, so when we used to do endurance we use an a double jointed Myler kimberwicke during endurance rides, or maybe a ride or two in between. I like it because I still get a good lateral feel with that bit compared to other kimberwickes. It's nice to have brakes. I learned this after bloodying his mouth on the 4th day of Death Valley Encounter trying to hold him back with a French Link snaffle. He totally respects the kimberwicke.

My mare has done her first LD in a rope halter, but she doesn't have race brain. She just thought she was on a long trail ride. Since she's 17 this year and we've really never done endurance, I doubt very much that we will be testing her for race brain. But I bet if I get her fit enough to really do a 50, she may be a kimberwicke subject too.

I'm curious why you want to keep them in a snaffle? I ride in a Little S
Hackamore for the ease in eating and drinking, is that the reason for
the sidepull? I've read that the snaffle is not necessarily the kindest
bit even though it is generally used to begin teaching the horses. Maybe
someone with more knowledge can speak up here.

I think he has the potential for race brain though. The other gelding I just started riding again after a layoff and have a snaffle on him. He is not so easy or sensitive. What is better, keeping a snaffle but risking putting him in circles even during conditioning rides or to change bits?
