[RC] The GAHR of 1976 page 163 - Tom Sites

From the Great American Horse Race of 1976 by Curt Lewis and Dennis Underwood......"page 163....Everyone moved up one position on 16 August when Claude "Mac" Abercrombie scratched both of his horses because they were lame.  Like several others were doing, Abercrombie decided he would continue despite no longer entered and would ride on those days when his horses were sound.  He was no longer under veteriniarian rules or listed on the daily time sheet position board. Like other unofficial riders who were riding along but not entered in the race, Abercrombie's horses were checked and monitored by the veterinarians but were "treated as needed with medication not permitted to competing horses," according to Dr. Bruce Branscomb, the Head Vet from Kansas to Sacramento."

I was there.  He says to this day he won the GAHR.  Dr. Bruce Branscomb the first elected Vet into the AERC Hall of Fame in 1977 said his horses were LAME.  I stand by my statement. ts
