Re: [RC] [RC] riding arabs, cold shoulder, getting started - Dawn Carrie

We offer such 13-15 mile "intro" rides at the two day ride I manage (in Texas)...horse goes through a pre- and post-ride vet check, rider gets a completion t-shirt just like the regular distances.  There's no time limit for completing, but riders could "pretend" they have, say, a 3 1/2 hour time limit to do the 15 miles (which is comparable to AERC time limits for longer distances), and see how long it takes them.

Donna,

Do rides in your area offer beginner or novice rides?  These are rides that are between 10 and 15 miles aimed at beginning riders and/or beginning horses.

They seem to really help with getting new riders to know the pace that is needed, and aren't so terribly long that it seems impossible to do.  In UMECRA we run these rides as competitive rides (without the horsemanship judging) and put riders in small groups with mentors, but I believe there's places that run them like mini-LDs.

Hope you can find one in your area,

Theresa
