Re: [RC] Idea NOT - Barbara McCrary

We raised several foals and I found out:
1) It is far more expensive to raise your own than buy one ready-made.
2) Mike is right. Even after you do raise your own, it takes at least 6-7 years from birth before you have any idea what kind of riding horse you have...comfort? tractability? durability?
3) I have found that there isn't enough time in my life to breed foals and wait for them to turn out. Go look for a nice 9-10 year old...old enough to have gone beyond "kid stuff" and then you can pick and choose. I sifted through about 8-10 horses until I found the right one for me. It takes time, but it's less expensive in the long run and you're more likely to find one whose traits are acceptable to you. Not every horse is right for every person.

I second that. Not only will you ride sooner, the best-bred foal can turn out to be poor or bad for riding.

Geeze! go buy a horse and ride it. No sense paying board on a foal. You will find what an adult of you want and for what you can afford if you are patent.
Or lease a horse?
