Re: [RC] FW: [RC] research - Carla Richardson

A few years ago there were two, separate, motorcycle deaths in our area, both from colliding with animals on the highway.  One was a bear (very rare, but it can happen) and the other was an elk.  Both times, all involved (animals included) were killed from the collisions.  At least on a horse you wouldn't collide with the animal -- just hope your horse doesn't bolt from seeing or smelling the bear... :-o

I feel much safer on a horse than on a motorcycle.  Where I ride my horse, I avoid roads, and I take my dog with me, to avoid surprising any bears.  :-)  Mike, are you the researcher that studied the bear population in the San Juans of Colorado, looking for grizzlies?

Actually I got kicked by someone else's horse while riding, got my ankle put
into a cast at an Alberta outpatient clinic. I guess that doesn't count,
though.

I wonder about the methodology of that study. For example, I think
motorcycle wrecks would be more likely to kill you than horse wrecks, i.e.,
for every 10 horse wrecks sending someone to hospital, 1 would kill, but for
every 10 bike wrecks, 3 would die -- ?

Actually I can see more wrecks/hour on a horse, quite a few more -- they are
far less controllable than a machine like a motorcycle. On the other hand
they're far slower and usually on much softer ground, so one would think the
injuries would be milder.
