[RC] OT-HomeMade Horse Trailer - heidi larson

My first horse was delivered to the fishing resort where I
grew up. My uncle sold her to my dad for $100 and threw in
the tack. I think he may have ripped us off!! Babe was a
27 year old, bay, sway-backed QH that had had way too many
babies and no health care to speak of. She was delivered
in the back of a ranch pick-up with wooden rails. I still
remember her coming up the driveway, looking over the cab
of the truck. She had travelled from Quincy, Wa. to just
past Little Fort, B.C. Canada. Probably a 10 hour drive.
She was so sway-backed. My uncle probably couldn't get any
more foals from her. She ran loose over our leased
acreage, wandering amongst the cabins at night, scaring the
customers who'd get up to use the outhouse in the night, or
rubbing her head on the side of their cabins, also scaring
them to death. City folk!! :) She lived with us for
about 2 years and then one day my dad said there were some
campers with lots of kids that wanted an old horse and that
he'd given her to them since we had trouble finding places
to winter her when we came back down to the states. A
couple years before my dad passed away I asked him if that
story was really true. He was a tough little irishman,
rarely given to tears, but he started to cry and said he'd
seen buzzards circling off the main road one day when he'd
gone to town for groceries and supplies. Had gotten out
and looked and she was laying there dead. He said it
looked like she'd just lain down and died, he never saw any
wounds or anything. I'm really surprised looking back that
she made it that long, she came from a working wheat and
cattle ranch and health care was the last thing that the
horses would ever see! But that day that truck drove up
that driveway was one of the best days of my life! I was
about 9 or 10 years old.

I sure
wouldn't do it now.
