[RC] starting horses late - Betty Edgar - sherman

The two I've worked with were great when it came to having a job. Sonny
never has to be asked to go, he just likes to go down the trail. He
doesn't worry if horses gallop past (he did worry about this a bit at
our first 50 but has since gotten over it), no tailgating, he also can
get out in front without hesitation. I think "no interest in working"
has more to do with being spoiled or inherent temperament rather than
the age at which a horse is put to work.

BTW, Sonny's year younger, half-brother turned out as good as Sonny
according to his trainer.

Seems to me the advantages and disadvantages lie in how the horse looks
at
life. Something I haven't yet seen addressed is work ethic. Depending
upon
the particular horse this can be a very big issue. I've experienced an
older unstarted horse who has been spoiled and has no interest in
working.
He's never had a job and he's not interested in starting one now, thank
you
very much.
Betty
