Re: [RC] [RC] Stigma of being treated - Maryanne Gabbani

I don't know about anyone else but any stigma involved with my rehydrating a horse is a hell of a lot better than that associated with having a horse die from the complications of dehydration. Jeez. Where's everyone's sense of proportion?

I've put horses on my farm on IV when they seemed dehydrated and out of sorts for whatever reason and they weren't even working.  It usually forstalled a larger problem.  Sure if they are working hard and out of sorts I'd want to do it even faster.

For now - here's what the vet committee newsletter from Feb 2007
states:

"There appears to be somewhat of a stigma amongst riders
associated with fluid therapy in their horses. As veterinarians,
we need to work together to rid the sport of this stigma. It will
virtually always benefit a horse to have fluid therapy post-ride.
It is not worth losing one's horse to a very treatable condition
such as ileus merely because of this stigma."
