Re: [RC] [RC] Making a difference (was: AERC joining, etc.) - Ranelle Rubin

Kat and Truman,

I think you missed my point. Jim and all of you are entitled to your opinion and responsible for expressing it. There is a way to do this generously. However, when someone calls to task another rider for having their horse treated at a ride..that is crossing the line, IMO.

Narrow minded statements like that will cause the newbies on this forum to hide problems from a vet that otherwise could be successfully treated. The stigma that needing to have a horse treated at a ride is a disgrace is not one any of us should perpetuate.

How do you think a new rider who read Jim's post would process that information at some future date in an emotionally charged moment at a ride???

All of us have seen horses tied to trailers or in corrals after a ride that would benefit from assistance or intervention of some sort (not necessarily by a vet), but who for whatever reason (ignorance or worse, the fear of being looked down on) are not getting the treatment they need???

I only objected to the method Jim chose to express his concerns about the H&W committee and their actions, not that he did. When he felt backed up against a wall, he came out swinging against a rider and human for whom I happen to have a great deal of respect.

I have chosen to drive 3 hrs to a ride instead of do one 10 min from my house because I disagreed with a particular route they chose, and felt it was not in the best interest of my horse to do that ride. I spoke privately to the RM, was clear on the facts, and did not enter. I "voted with my feet." I did not, however get on Ridecamp or spread my beliefs around which would have certainly caused other riders to elect not to enter.

Actually I think you are right Kat. One also has to separate the issues of supporting endurance riding with supporting the AERC - they are NOT the same. Even if I decided to not rejoin, I would still join and support local and regional organizations and support rides and ride managers. Another words I have no issues with endurance riding. I actually have no issues with the directions the present and past AERC presidents been trying to move the AERC over the last three years. I feel Mike and Stagg before him have done a good job.

Like it or not being on any BOD is a political job. Like any political job a director will often find themselves in a fishbowl - and be "held accountable" by members they may not personally agree with. That's part of the job. That just goes with the territory. If one thinks this is a new phenomenon - recall Harry Truman's statement, "If it's too hot in the kitchen - then get out." He was not referring to baking a pie ;-) .

The statement:

"Bottom line, if you don't like it, live with it,
don't do it, or get involved! But don't berate
those who are volunteering their time to make
a difference!"

brings back shades of the 60's and early 70's to the classic "Love it or Leave it" in referring to the Vietnam war protest. Not only a pretty narrow view but also fairly non-productive.

p.s. I am personally of the opinion that people should attempt to effect change by voting with their feet (i.e. refuse to join) MORE quickly rather than as a last resort. Volunteers or anybody else who run an organization can ignore people who are willing to live with it or who are willing to act futilely to effect change from within, but if they do that to people who vote with their feet, they will rapidly find themselves powerless because they have no constituents.
