Re: [RC] horses off the track..go for it - Janice Taylor

My limited experience with off the track horses for endurance have been positive in all respects. But then I've only had experience with two...

The first was High Winds Jedi. I bred him, green broke him, sent him to the track with the aid of friends/parnerships. He raced for two seasons, did just so, so, although he did break a track record before coming home. He was hot at first, but let him down slowly, did some easy slow miles while he relearned the ropes. After the first competitive ride in rough country with my daughter aboard, he knew the ropes. He had a great work ethic. He went on to greater things with Nina Warren and finally with Valerie Kanavy. For me he was better at the actual rides than on training rides where he liked to spook, even at things he had spooked at weeks ago, which no longer were there...<g> Never got me off, but many close calls. He was a sweet horse that loved to go. Obviously, he went, and went, and went.

Next is the horse I own now. Made the happy purchase of Noways, from Sunnyland Arabians. He is a Magus son who raced but never did anything worth keeping him on the track. Kathleen then worked with him, and he went to a dressage trainer. He is just a wonderful horse, but he is strong... real strong! But manageable, with a great work ethic and a sweet sensitive, disposition as well. A horse one likes to be around. His favorite gait is the long canter edging into a full gallop...<g> he can do this for miles with ease. However it is a bit hard on my arms and shoulders... I'm confident he will make me a wonderful endurance horse when he is ready. We just finished two days of LD (30 miles) at BSF, where he took 5th place both days. He would have finished further back on the second day, if my arms weren't so worn out, but first to finish if I'd let him... He loves to go, and is highly competitive.

So from my perspective, off the track horses are just great!

Janice

I have used two horses off the track .* They were hot buggers to ride at first but very good distance horses once they got used to the idea we were talking riding hrs. instead of minutes.. They had been used athletically so had a good foundation to add distnce conditioning to. Plus, fast if you had to race in, any one do that any more??

* Mine were Appaloosa /TB crosses
