[RC] Arabs off the track - k s swigart

Also, some theorize that the muscular imbalance
can be caused by constant use of one particular
lead (usually left) at the canter, which might
also explain the lopsidedness of horses off the
track.

Horses on the track use both leads not just the left lead. Other than Quarter
Horses that run really short distances down straight lines (about which I don't
know enough to know if they change leads or not), all race horses that go
around turns, even if they are all left hand turns, also use the right lead.

It is a fallacy that US race horses only use their left leads just because all
tracks in the US are pretty much left hand ovals. They use the right leads on
the straight away...e.g. on the home stretch.

They are probably better at making left turns than right turns, but this
doesn't mean that they use their left lead more than their right lead.

The horse can't run the race all on one lead...at least not successfully if it
is going more than a quarter of a mile. It would wear them out and they would
lose to horses that change leads.

The shortest Arab races I know of are 4 furlongs (1/2 mile). That horse is
gonna use both leads. The better it is at balancing between them, the more
successful the horse is likely to be.
