Re: [RC] [RC] Parelli (and other clinicians) - Elizabeth Chase

That comment is taken out of context.

The full context is regarding safety in general. Many people wear helmets and
get on an unruly horse, or disregard safety issues and signals of imminent
issues with the horse. And a helmet will not protect your neck from snapping.

I am a trauma nurse. I see all kinds; but the consistent factor with
horse-related injuries seems to be: an unfamiliar horse, getting on an agitated
horse anyway, pushing a horse through a situation for which it is unprepared. A
local trainer was killed last year when struck by a colt she was attempting to
dominate. She was wearing a helmet. She was not kicked in the head.

Lotsa stories to share around a campfire some night.

I think that general safety and knowledge of horse psychology is paramount
before riding. At least at some very basic level.

I KNOW the PNH courses emphasize safety; so does Driver's ED in high school.
Parable: Some of those teenage drivers take well to the instruction, and others
become statistics that drive up the insurance rates for those who do drive
safely.

Ride safe, however you ride,

Again, I'll say I agree with much of what they do, but his comment:

"It's what you put in your head, not on it that keeps you safe"

is a direct dig at helmet wearers...

I have not heard that comment...

I DO BELIEVE IN HELMETS... I wear one every time I ride...

You also have to have some Savvy/experience/communication with your
horse.. just wearing a helmet is not going to save you... So, I can
see where he might have said that...

Cause you have to know how to communicate with a horse, on the ground
or up on top too, you have to have the fondation before you get on a
horse... I happen to believe you need a helmet too.

I think a helmet should always be worn when on a horse, I agree with
you and do not like it that they don't wear them...
