FW: FW: FW: [RC] muscle cramps - Mike Sherrell

All our horses have mineral blocks -- mainly salt, but with trace minerals.
I've never had a horse cramp, and I ride for 6 hours or more in the heat of
the day in the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys all July and August with
the temp in the 90s. So I was wondering what to do if one suddenly cramped.

The horse I ride in the heat -- any horse I'd ride this many hours in a
day -- has not much body fat, is so well-conditioned he/she is high
withered, tall and narrow rather than cylindrical, sweats but not to the
point of dripping, and drinks found water several times, much of which I
suspect has dissolved minerals, though I don't know. Maybe I shouldn't
worry.

When the temperatures start hitting in the 85+ range I
have iodized salt blocks in the pastures and in the
feed bins of their stalls. For those horses that do
not lick the salt blocks I sprinkle about a tablespoon
of Kosher Salt over their grain at night. Their
intake of water increased during the night to give
them a head start on hydration for the next day.

In NorCal our temperatures can go from 106 during the
day to 52 at night. Unfortunately, horses will drink
a lot of water in colder weather - however, that is
usually when the temps get below the 40's. And I do
have horses that will drink more in the winter than
they do in the summer heat. It is probably because it
is a very COLD / DRY winter here. They can dehydrate
just as quickly in the winter as they can in the
summer.

The primary difference of more muscle cramps in the
summer than the winter. They are more active and
being worked more in the summer months. So, their
muscles have little to no time to recover each day.

One of the things that I did over the last few years
was add a Kinetico Water treatment system to our
ranch. With that system I use Potassium Chloride
tablets inside of the regular salt tablets. So, they
are getting a lot more potassium than they would
normally. I am hoping the decrease in muscle spasms
has a direct correlation to the addition of the PC to
their drinking water. I am, on the other hand, not
willing to take the risk, in diverting their drinking
supply to a none PC source to prove it out. I'll take
the no muscle spasm days over the muscle spasm
days...anythime! :)

Seriously, adding salt to their diet is essential. I
would think that you would have a large water table
source of PC in your area. Have you had your water
tested? You might also want to have it tested for the
iron content. Too much iron and too little potassium
can cause muscle cramping/spasm difficulties as well.

Huh! So what do you do -- give them salty water?

their muscles will twitch, freeze up, become stiff,
and sometimes go down!

Ever have a muscle spasm? That's a muscle cramp.
They spasm and tighten up. It hurts.
