Re: [RC] Best sponge - rides2far@xxxxxxxx

I am trying to figure out the best sponge to use and method to cool my horse
and lower the heart rate. Also, what kind of sweat scraper >>>to use. Any
tips? Carla

I don't care for the natural sponges. Sure, they soak up a lot of water, but
they don't fit your hand well. :-P I like the hourglass sort of shaped car
wash sponges. The trick is get about 6 for your vet check. After they get a
little age on them they're good enough to have a string tied on and be your
"throwing sponge". If you put a brand new one on your throwing sponge they
don't soak up water as well. When they get all limp it's time to move on to the
next one.

I once watched Steve Rojek sponging his horse at Million Pines (hot ride) He
picked up a new sponge each time rather than put a warm sponge back into his
bucket. Now that's thinking. >g< Your sponge water really will warm up so
switch buckets even when some is left if you want it to stay cold.

For the sweat scraper, I like the curved plastic with the rubber edge.
