Many of you already know the story of how Samburu KA and I went off a canel, full of water, in Merced, a number of years ago. For those who do not. Sammy and I were up on a canel minding our own business. Approaching horse tosses rider, horse ran straight at us. We could go right, onto a 4 lane busy road, in front of traffic. We could go left into the drink. I let Sammy decide because there was no where I could dismount quickly without loosing footing either way. He tried to turn in the direction the horse was headed. Horse knocked into Sammy and he slipped backward into the water. I was pinnned under him. He lifted himself off of me cutting his legs on the cement until he knew I was out from under him. So, yes, it can be far worse with a loose horse! I was fortunate that Sammy remained calm. Otherwise I would have been drowned and/or pummeled under him. I love Sammy.
