Re: [RC] 101degrees -old horse - Kathy Klenk

And don't forget, here in Georgia we are also under a health watch for bad air quality due to ozone and fine particles. Time to move. What is the most horse friendly towns/states out there anyway? :-) with good enough weather and enough trails to ride?? Has anyone ever compiled a list?

I am watching my thermometer, it's now 88 degrees, humidity 70%, oh, good it is dropping, it was 90% humidity and hour ago at 78 degrees. The last couple days the hroses are sweating just walking in to get their suppliments. Everyday they have dried salt on their backs. I injured my shoulder don't ask me how I woke up last Monday and couldn't move without alot of pain.
Finally up and around on Aleve and trying not to use my right arm for anything strenous. It's in my shoulder blade and neck--I did 'something" last year while pulling our RAMM fence and it has come and gone since then---So this heat wave hit and I had the younger son feeding the old horse.
Finally got outside and noticed his neck is wrinkling, so I did a pinch test and it's not as good as it should be-- he has dropped some weight, but don't think it is that(that was a month ago when he accidently got locked in for 24 in his stall and then was anxious about eating for a couple days unless I stayed with him and hand fed him. He can loose weight if he misses one meal (big Tb--24 years old or so).
Anyway , I added table salt to his food last night as I figured he isn't drinking enough perhaps. He has been gimping around again-- I beleive he has arthritis in his back or shoulder. He has a old healed synoval injury to his left knee, but he has been showing lamness that looks like it is higher up. Never any heat or swelling, I don't think it is in his feet or legs----- then it goes away. He'll run around with the arabs, even rearing and kicking out like a bucking horse. Then he pays for it . May be lame like this for a two weeks.
He is on 24 turnout and has to navigate a slope to get to the water trough. They all come in together to drink several times a day.
He gets MSN daily and a multivitamin suppliment for horses on grass. 4 lbs of plain beet pulp soaked. And about 6 lbs of Alphalfa pellets and 1 cup oil-- then some Flax seed and BOSS.Plus all the grass hay 24 /7--fescue/orchard. Not much pasture left, he does nibble tree bark, but always has no matter where he lives or what he has to eat, and teaches everyone else to do it.
The weather is goiing to top 101 today and close to that all week, Humnidity in the 50-90% range. This is GEORGIA heat- umidity--wave...........
I am thinking the plain salt block and the mineral blockette is not enough--- I just hadn't gotten around to getting loose salt--- but am wondering if I should get electrolites and add those to his feed or jsut throw in some loose salt. Most around here are NOT the endurance kind. But I did see some Acculites in Chattanooga .
Wow, I just looked again. it is 92% and 66% humidity and it's only 10:30 am..Can't imagine hot it will be at 4 pm when we are usually hottest part of the day. .
