[RC] More on Melinsung Ranch - Jay Randle

Hi All

Further to my post on the situation at Melinsung Ranch, Malaysia, some new information is now available from the local perspective:

"There will be no resolve for the Melinsung horses from within the country's governing Bodies or Representatives. Why? The fear of retribution is too great for the vets from DVS to act as they should and we would like them to.

Not if we are talking prosecution. Datuk Ghani has them by the balls, he knows that and so do they.
Ok, the animals might be fed right now, but what is really needed is a law suit against him which will hopefully deter him or others along those 'first-class-animal-lover' lines to try and pull those stunts again!

Not sure about SPCA, but I would like to think they might just be in a similiar situation.

The King? Well, let's say it this way: His Majesty might not be exactly 'pleased' with what is happening, but he is not going to go beyond a few reprimanding words towards Datuk Ghani. Those two might not be related, but hey, blood is still thicker than water!

The only hope there is are more international headlines which will expose the case to the world plus the interference of big and powerful animal rights activists like PETA/RSPCA and the likes. These organizations will have to put enough pressure on the Malaysian Government to make things happen. Hopefully this case is big enough for them to try and stirr the pot...! "

AND....

"I think you are right.

To make any difference now, there needs to be international pessure on the authorities so that defending this is more costly to Malaysia's image than prosecuting. But who is going to push this now? Animal lovers in Sabah are powerless against someone in this position and and scared to do anything.

Any suggestions?"

These are comments from Malaysian endurance riders who know about the situation at Melinsung. As I previously said, most endurance riders in Malaysia are just as horrified and are just as worried about these horses as we are. However I am sure that we don't know how bad the political pressure is for them personally (well, sometimes I think that I do!), and it seems that the locals are pretty hamstrung about what they can and cannot do. Most of this is because of the corruption and distrust that exists within the structure of their government, it seems.

When people are threatened with loss of jobs, damage to personal property, threats against their person or their families, threats against their future in the sport, and the like, it is very difficult for them to continue to fight the agressors and the transgressors. But maybe we can help? The most effective global solution these days is media pressure. Any other suggestions?

Best regards
