[RC] Question about Tevis "holds" - Mary Howell

If I read the trail and checkpoint information on the Tevis website
correctly, there's only 2 actual holds: Robinson Flat at 36 miles and
Foresthill at 69 miles.

For anyone who's ridden or crewed this ride, how do the "gate & go's" work
exactly, and do the front runners tend to hang out any longer than the
minimum time to pulse down?

At a gate and go in MD last April, for example, we were required to stay 10
minutes after getting our pulse or "in" time, which gave the horses enough
of a break to pee and eat a bit of grass and carrots.

Thanks for the clarification!

Mary Howell

(who will be rooting for several fellow Virginians and also Nicky Meuten of
NC and Darryl Downs and Skip and Ashley Kemerer of MD/PA - you guys survived
the rocks of OD, so hang in there and keep a bandanna on so you don't eat
too much dust!!! :)
