[RC] Question for the vets... - Tracy Bradford

My future endurance mount, a two year old mule, was just diagnosed
with a hernia through the inguinal canal. Basically, he looks like
he's an intact stallion. The vet did a 15 second palpation and gave
me the diagnosis. Since this sounds exceptionally serious I want to
have an operation immediately. Tomorrow I'll call and set up an
appointment with a facility equipped to do surgery. My questions:
should I get a second opinion? (what if its just a fatty build up?).
Is an ultrasound a worthwhile tool to get a better diagnosis? How did
this happen? He was gelded six months ago, just before I got him.
Will this affect his future career as an endurance mount?
Thanks, hope someone has some experience here.
Tracy
