RE: [RC] Trail Markings - heidi

Weiser River Rail Trail is a ride with no markings--you just follow the old railbed.  (Well, I guess they did have a couple of marked spots this year--I didn't get there to ride it this year--but my understanding was that there were a couple of bridges that were out or not safe or something, so there were marked routes around them.)

As long as people know in advance that there is a section that is not marked, and it is that obvious, it shouldn't present a problem.  But mile markers sure are nice--WRRT has them, and it is nice to be able to count them off.  As long as you have either human beings (as you described) at beginning and end, or a big sign saying "no more markings for 10 miles" when you start on it and really obvious markings when you get to the end of it, it shouldn't be a problem.

I am interested in hearing from everybody:

You are on a 100 mile ride.
The trail follows a 10'-18' wide jeep road.
This road has NO place to turn off of it for 10+ miles.
There is a person at the intersection to get onto the trail telling you
which way to go to get onto the road.

How many, how often do you want any kind of trail markings?

Would it be okay (assuming that this were described in the trail
directions so you knew it was coming) to have no marking along this
section of trail?

If the person at the intersection TOLD you that there would be no
markings for the next ten miles\

If there would be a person at the next intersection telling you which
way to go?

If you are not comfortable with no markings at all, would one each mile
telling you how many miles you had gone be good enough?
