Re: [RC] pulse rates/VC's/old way vs new - Truman Prevatt

I've done rides with a 25 mile loop. I've done them with the 25 mile loop first an hold and another check in the last 25 miles. I've done them with a check at 12.5 miles a check at 25 and a 25 mile loop for a 50.

IMO I would much rather do the latter - an early check than he former. That gives you a chance to catch something early before it becomes a problem. Some of the early ride crashes are the worse. By 25 miles the horses are warmed up and running efficiently. And the early check also splits the horses up by recoveries so the horses that are being pulled along by adrenaline will only be pulled along for 12 miles instead of 25.

If I had my choice, to be conservative, I'd have an early check to split
the horses up by conditioning levels (recoveries) as soon as possible.
The later checks aren't as big of a deal to me since the horses have
settled in and are out of stampede mode, pretty easy to rate them and get
them to eat along the trail if you like by then. Somebody there is
thinking like a human if you ask me. "The farther you go the more you
need rest".
