[RC] Huginn 7/18/2007 Update - LONG - Raven

Hi Guys,

Sorry...I have given you a recent update. Things here ...are a bit stressful.

Monday 7/16, I took Huginn back to the U of MN vet hospital. They did
another endoscope on him. His lymph nodes looked better, but...still
not normal.

While in there...they took a guttural pouch lavage sample for a PCR
test. Hoping to get the PCR results back on Friday. So, far Huginn has
had three negative strangles tests (1 nasal swab and 2 culturals).
Also...to date, he has had NO nasal discharge.

While in his trachea, they saw just a bit of mucus, they took some of
that for a cytology. That came back yesterday, with no bacteria.

I was told that since the lymph nodes looked good, it most likely was
not cancer. So, I drove home...on cloud 9. THEN.....I had been home
for one hour when Dr. Tan called me to tell me that the calcium count
was still high and cancer could not be ruled out!

IF it is cancer...she thinks that Huginn got a bad strain of
"something" from that woman with the sick horse at the endurance
clinic and since his immune system is compromised by the cancer...he
is having a hard time fighting it.

CBC
6/29 mild anemia, elevation in protein, at 22% and 9.5gd/l respectively.

White Blood Count history: (normal range 4600-11600)

7/16 15600/ul and fibrinogen 0.2g/dl (noted "normal") Other notes
"evidence of inflammation, liver values normal and elevated globulin,
consisted with inflammation.
7/7 14,400/ul
7/4 26,6000/ul
7/2 13,300/ul and fibrinogen elevated at 6.6g/dl

Calcium history:

7/16 14.5mg/dl
7/7 15.6mg/dl
7/4 15.3 mg/dl
7/2 13.1mg.dl (noted "consistent with neoplasia")

Other stuff:
7/7 Globulin 5.9g/dl
7/4 Liver enzymes SDH 9 U/L and globulin 6.5g/dl
7/2 Increased protein (9.1g/dl) and globulin 6.2g/dl due to inflammation
7/2 Liver enzymes SDH 28 U/L

Huginn got his last Naxcel (17cc) on Sunday (7/15) morning. He is
still on 25cc Gentocin.

Temps:
On 7/4 was close to 105 (if I remember correctlly. He was given
banimine and temp dropped to 102, by 2 pm.

Since then, his temps have been in the 99.0 - 100.4 range. UNTIL Monday 7/16.

Temps:
7/16 6am-100.2, 3pm-102.2, 9pm-101.8

7/17 6am-101.2, 3pm-102.5, 6pm-102.7 (cold hose and turned on fan), 9pm-102.0

7/18 6am 100.9, 3pm-102.9 (cold hosed and turned on fan), 6pm-101.9

I called Dr. Tan this morning and she wants me to start Naxcel AGAIN.
I am not comfortable with doing this. Huginn has been on 4 different
anti-B's since June23rd. This really concerns me.

His last 25cc Gentocin injection is due Friday at 6pm.

Last night I noticed that Huginn has mild swelling on both butt (side
of tail) injection sites. It looks like the swelling that we get
after a vaccination, rised and warm to the touch.

This morning I asked Dr. Tan about this...as this means that only the
left side of his neck has not swelling. He had a small swollen spot on
the right side of his neck caused my Naxcel, and since then...I have
not been using that side. Now...I notice today, that is is down.

Anywho...I do not feel comfortable in continuing to use the butt(back
side nest to where tail hangs) as an injection site, until that
swelling does down.

After this afternoon's 102.9 temp, I was very upset. I called the U of
MN and requested to speak with the other Vet who has taken part in
Huginn's care, Dr. Wilson. I asked her about Huginn's temps and
expressed my concerns about going back on Naxcel. At this time she
mentioned that the 7/16 cytology there was "fungus" found! So...what
the heck is that??? And why did Dr. Tan not mentioned this?

Dr. Wilson suggested that my options were to bring Huginn back to the
U of MN to another eval. FOR WHAT? He was admitted on June 29 and
they had him for 10 days, and were not able to find what the cause is.
She also told me not to rule out cancer. <:9[

Dr. Wilson suggested that I think about giving Huginn an immune
booster. I will need to research that.

I sure would love to hear what you guys think about all of this.

So..that is what is going on with us. Please continue to send Huginn
your prayers, healing energy and support. He sure does need it!
THANKS A LOT~!!!!
