Re: [RC] Feed Question - Laney Humphrey

They are high in fat calories so they're great for a horse that needs to put on weight. They also make the coat really shine, again because of the fat. Horses really do like them.

Yes, if your horse is getting too heavy, cut back on the amount of
oats you’re feeding until you’re riding regularly. The rule is “feed
the work”. You could always give her more on the days that you ride.
There are some very good complete vitamin & minerals you can get and
add those to just a little bit of oats & sunflower seeds, slightly
dampened so it’ll stick to the feed.

My wife has been feeding her horses oats and sunflower seeds for a
few months, and we recently (gradually) moved my endurance horse
over to oats (not the sunflower seeds) on a trial basis. How do I
know what supplements to feed her now that she is not getting a
"complete" sweet feed?
Her weight has ballooned (although I've not ridden her since May due
to work and my dad's health, which has required me to be out of
town). She looks healthy and seems to have lots of energy, and I
hope to ride her later this week.
Appreciate folks' thoughts.
