Re: [RC] The hay situation - Lynne Glazer

Yeah, sad. Here it's orange groves ripped out for houses in already crowded SoCal without the infrastructure to handle 'em in terms of water, roads, etc. Last year they did it on 600 acres on the backside of our little mountain, not that they have approval to build yet or anything; it's a vast wasteland now of chipped wood.

Another thing that is astonishing is local people buying Florida orange juice and Chilean oranges when the very best in the world is grown right here in the Inland Empire. Local juice compared to Floridian--dark and rich, there's just nothing better. <http:// www.orangesunrise.net> if you're into history.

To bring it back to endurance, we loved riding through the groves, especially on hot days. I remember riding through the grapevines too, but no shade--and those are even being ripped out down here for more development. Soon all that will be left is a new offramp on I-15 named after the vineyards to commemorate that there once was a wine industry here.

Driving throughout CA and seeing good pastureland converted to vineyards just sickens my husband and me. Of course, we are cattlemen, through and through, so seeing pastureland converted is very sad. Then, when the person who plants vineyards either looses his interest or his shirt, the vineyards are abandoned, along with the posts, wire trellises, and drip lines. It's costly to remove and convert back to pasture. There's nothing much prettier than a herd of cattle grazing contentedly on a nice hilly pasture. Sigh.....

There is plenty of California wine for drowning sorrows. In our region *a lot* of grazing land and hay fields have been converted to vineyards. Too bad the horses can't live on wine (but they love to munch on grape leaves).
