Re: [RC] No Cavalry award given - Anne Heilgeist

I attended the BC and, yes, unfortunately, the horse wasn't fit to continue.  However, even up to that point, this morning, all riders, volunteers and vets were cheering for "Cavalry" as many of us called him.  At every vet check for the 100, many of the volunteers, crew and vets would ask if Cavalry had come in yet and how were they doing.  We all became quite attached to their progress.  Plus, the fact that Paul always had a smile on his face and his horse just calmly followed him everywhere when he was in hold made all of us smile.  Paul can tell you himself but they did fall (just a scrape on the knees though) coming out of the dark into Edinburg Gap.  But their ride was inspiring.  Makes me want to try calvary next year.

"Old Dominion Cavalry Award

The Cavalry Award is presented to the 100 mile horse and rider team which successfully completes, without assistance, the 100 mile division of Old Dominion 25/50/100 mile ride and is judged in the best condition on Sunday morning based on a formula similar to that used for the Old Dominion Trophy. Riders must declare their intention to compete for the award before the ride start. Acceptance of any type of unauthorized assistance during the ride disqualifies the team from this award. Please read the rules and requirements for riding cavalry that are on this website under the Ride Entry Form menu link. There is no fee for registering."  From:  http://www.olddominionrides.org/awards.html
I'm guessing the horse wasn't "fit to continue" this morning.  (I didn't walk up to watch the BC judging)
