Please be aware that California is NOT cutting down trees at an alarming rate, as the restrictive and crippling rules against harvesting has shut down and put many mills out of business.  Please also be aware that the non-self regenerating species are replanted, and the self-regenerating species are re-growing nicely.  A lot of the anxiety over timber harvesting is manufactured by groups that rake in a lot of money from folks who are worried about the demise of forests.  Much of the anxiety is unnecessary and the demise of forests is untrue.
Since harvesting in California has diminished to a huge degree, the wood we need is imported.  This does several things...it sends U.S. money out of our own country, it takes away various tax monies from our state and country, and it uses vast amounts of fuel to bring the wood into our country from somewhere else.
I don't know where the area is that is being discussed, but there is plenty of wildlife here at our place.  And harvesting timber carefully and selectively simply opens up the forest to sunlight, thereby growing the kind of vegetation that deer love best.  The deer are attracting lions, although those also have a taste for calves and goats.  If you were a rancher, you wouldn't be very happy to lose your livestock.
Try not to be taken in by the "crisis industry."  It is a very well organized business.
I agree that there are far too many people on the planet, but I doubt anyone has a good solution short of dumping all the medical advancements we have made and let babies, children and anyone over 40 die of natural death as they used to over 125 years ago, or even less.

I find it interesting that everyone is alarmed about Global Warming and the polar bears, but, they want coyotes, bears, and mountain lions out of "their" trails and backyards. California is cutting down trees to an alarming degree to build homes, but, then people complain about the increased animal action in those new neighborhoods and the old neighborhoods complain about  the increased wind, dust and errosion because the tress are gone. I hope one day we learn and correct what we are doing to our world. It's not just the gas it's what we are doing locally that will made a big difference. I doubt however it will be in my life time.
