[RC] Food along the trail.. - Ranelle Rubin

Ridecampers:

RE: Replenishing food and elytes

Also, there is only one hold before 53 miles. Word is there's not a lot
to offer them to eat on the trail. For those who like to "replenish
electrolytes naturally" doesn't sound .like this is your ride. Do you
carry food along for them? (we will be dosing electrolytes, believe me!)

I have a huge Arab (1089 lbs on the scale at Washoe Valley last month)

At a ride, I am always concerned about his energy needs. Three things I do that have helped him alot:

I slice carrots with a crinkle cutter, then squirt a bit of Dynaspark on them..my horse loves it. I carry a very small travel size squirt bottle with about 2 oz of Dynaspark on my saddle.

I carry a water bottle with Dyanspark, applesauce, and Probiotic on my saddle. My horse will turn his head and open his mouth for a squirt..He even bit the top off the water bottle once!

I carry a quart ziploc with a little Pelleted Grain Ration from Dynamite-it is absorbed easily, and absorbs alot of water very quickly. I put a few cups into his collapsible bucket (or his scoop if I am in a hurry) with a few squirts of the concoction in my water bottle..he loves it! If there is alfafa there, I will often shake some leaves into this mash and add lots of water..my horse scarfs it down! The bucket I use is from Australian Connection and is small (only about 4" high and about 10" across). It folds easily around the ziploc and tucks into my pack.

It is very messy!! And the Dynaspark has molasses in it, so be ready not to care if you get it on you :)

So, my thoughts on elytes are give frequent small doses.
