[RC] Price differences in CA vs TN - Spottedracer

On the state salaries that CA offers for the same jobs that my husband and I have/will have - yep - we COULD easily afford those housing costs (granted we both moved AWAY from the city, to live in the country - don't WANT to live in a city setting...).... Since we'd be making $200-300K per year in CA - but here in TN our combined income will still be under $100K per year.

The average state salary in CA is in line with the living costs in CA. Same as TN - BUT- that said, for the costs of everything else (vet, farrier, coggins, tires, hay, etc) .. CA still pay much less (as % of their income) as we currently do here in TN. So in TN it's actually more expensive to keep a horse now - than in CA.. (at least the area my close relatives live in)  Since the prices have gone up to CA prices - but our incomes remain the same..

As for the earthquakes, just a thought... Memphis is near one of America's most dangerous fault lines, yet their building codes have nothing in them for bringing the buildings up to the level to survive even a moderate earthquake... So if a 7.2 hit several CA cities - MOST of the buildings would handle it with minimal/moderate damage.. Same Quake hits Memphis - say GOODBYE to the entire city, and much of it's population and hospitals.... (this information was given to the TN State Fire Marshal's office during a week-long earthquake training session in Atlanta....)

I'd rather be visiting my relatives in CA during this type of quake - than my daughter's Grandparents in Memphis!!
