Re: [RC] Electrolytes - Jody Rogers-Buttram

Now ....that is the million dollar question.
For me, I had to live and learn.  I will say this:
The mares "tend" to be more sensitive to cramping
than my boys have.  I believe that any ole mix
will work on Cash.  He never has had a problem and
if anyone could do without...he could.  So, yes, I do
adjust the what/how much and when to each horse.  But, they all
eat the salt, Rose particularly likes mud in one spot on
the conditioning trail.  Just have to ride them and see
how they do.

So my next question :) is what do you use to judge what your
particular horse needs?

Certainly, if your horse has had a problem with thumps, cramps, etc.
that would be a signal that he needed more electrolytes. However,
the whole idea is to avoid those problems, so what do you go by?

Dawn mentioned the difference in salt block consumption, and I can
relate to that. My old horse, which I had for his entire 25 years,
would eat salt blocks like candy. My new fellow has barely put a
dent in his after a year.
