Re: [RC] [RC] Electrolytes - Dawn Carrie

I love the "POFAW" acronym for Heidi's "recipe.  LOL

Seriously, though...Heidi is right...get to know your horse and don't just give the amount of elytes that everyone else does "just because."  My husband and I do elyte our horses, but each one gets different amounts and at different frequencies.  The one who gets the most is hubby's Paso Fino...and even then, for a couple of days after a 50 he'll be biting chunks off the salt block and chewing them, and gobbling the loose salt.

I appreciate all the feedback folks, and the advice that came with
it.  Lots of good stuff in there.  I think I might check out the
DynaSpark, since horses seem to like the taste, and keep some LyteNow
on hand as a "just in case of emergency" item if I need something
fast-acting.

The electrolytes I currently have (nobody mentioned them - AppleLyte
crystals) I use pretty sparingly, and only on really hot days or
before a race.  I knew that you could over-dose on elytes, so I
generally add it to his beet pulp the night before.  If I get heavy-
handed, my horse won't eat it, so that limits me to giving him about
a quarter of what the directions call for.  I mostly use them to try
and get him to drink really well before the ride.

Thanks!
