RE: [RC] The Great Santa Fe Trail Horse Race/nothing new - Suzanne Avery DVM

I am trying to catch up on this list. I just got home tonight and was away
for a couple of days or so.

Kim, you are so right about the management of the Santa Fe Ride. The
management of the ride also referred me to the AERC website for more
information, rides etc. Everyone who enters the ride also has to complete
in one 50 mile endurance ride.

Well, I have met one of these "inexperienced" riders who has already
entered the Great Santa Fe Horse race. He is not doing his research
watching Walt Disney movies. He is training and getting advice from a very
experienced, successful endurance rider. He thought this ride would be an
"adventure" and then preceeded to get advice and do his homework by working
with an experienced AERC member who has helped him choose horses, helped him
pick out suitable tack, riding clothing, etc.
He makes a trek every so many weeks to California so he can actually
condition and train with this experienced AERC rider. She has set up a
conditioning and training program for him to do at home.

So, while you guys can speculate on what the "inexperienced" are doing to
prepare for their lifetime adventure, I know for a fact that one of the
"inexperienced" you talk about is probably getting the best advice and
information to make this a success. It was the Santa Fe ride management who
directed this "inexperienced" person to the experienced AERC rider for
advice. Who is to say that other NON endurance riders aren't doing the same
thing that want to prepare for this event.

What makes you assume that all of the non experienced riders who would like
to try this ride won't seek advice and information before hand and will get
the majority of their information from a movie??

I'll be curious as to whether quite a few of them do their research
watching Hidalgo, Bite the Bullet, The Black Stallion Returns and
"Virginia's Run". According to those movies, all long distance races
involve lots of pushing each other off your horses at a dead gallop. I've
watched these movies and it just fascinates me that everyone is
constantly pushing each other off their horses. Just in case, they might
ought to have drag riders to pick up the people who are on foot and some
fast riders available to chase down the loose ones. >g< I wonder where we
got the idea to always stop and help each other the way we do? That's not
going to get us a feature movie any time soon so maybe we should stop
that?
