I too have used spurs for years and found that all of my horses now 
respond very nicely to just a little calf pressure before the spur 
ever makes contact. I still wear the spurs for those twice-a-year 
occasions where I want to "go-where-I-want-to-go-now" without a big 
discussion about it. ;-)
