[RC] heart murmur - B. L. Kossowan

I'm a little behind on reading ridecamp digests, so please forgive me for
wading in late yet again. My previous endurance horse, KC's Angel, had a faint
heart murmur. It didn't bother her until it killed her. She completed two out
of the four 100s in which she was entered with one second place (Alberta & FEI
only - not AERC, BTW) and did very well at 50s, then died of a burst heart
valve during spring training, right after a light ride in the neighbourhood. I
found out later that her sire had also died suddenly at about the same age (11)
and with the same symptoms. He was a show horse and never used in performance
that I know of. My thoughts? Expect the best and prepare for the worst. Thank
God, Angie had delivered a lovely filly the year before, and that one will
start competing next year.
