[RC] "Pre-Judging" (was: Hate mail, etc.) - k s swigart

Roxanne/Kentucky said:

For those of you who do not know her [Angie] aren't
you just as guilty of prejudging and passing judgement
as you so easily judge her and her writings?

Actually, no. People who publish things for all the world to read (that
is what publishing means) are ASKING to for readers some of whom may be
total strangers to pass judgement on what they have written.

If you only want your stuff to be read and critiqued by people who know
you well, publishing ain't for you.

It is really difficult (impossible???) to write and publish things about
which nobody who might possibly read it might take offense, but that
doesn't change the fact that when you publish things in a world wider
than just your circle of friends, that those people are not within their
rights to judge you only by what you have published.

However, what can be really difficult is keeping people that you don't
know (the problem isn't that they don't know you) from reading into what
you have written something you never actually said....and almost
invariably they read these things into it because of their own biases,
not yours.

Consequently, when spottedracer/LP went off at Angie for her lack of
acceptance of minorities, her closed-mindedness and her lack of
appreciation of diversity; despite the fact that Angie never once made
any mention of these things anywhere in her article, speaks VOLUMES
about spottedracer/LP and her own lack of acceptance of minorities, her
closed-mindedness and lack of appreciation of diversity.

It was, in fact, an admission on LP's part that if SHE had written
something like what Angie wrote it would be because she is a
closed-minded racist, and she leaped to the conclusion that that must
have been what Angie meant as well.

One of the hardest things to do is to keep people from reading things
you never said and never would have meant into something that you wrote.
Doesn't mean that you shouldn't try to avoid doing so.

However, I can attest to knowing just how hard it is.
