I observed an interesting thing crewing at two Tevis's.  The horses at
Michigan Bluff that stood over the cool water troughs with their noses
6 or so inches from the water heart rates dropped faster than the horses
that were standing away from the troughs even though both groups were
getting sponged the same amount with the same water.  I concluded that the horses breathing in the cooled air coming off the water had help cooling themselves
through their lungs.
   
Something I would definitely want to do if I were riding endurance.
